Root Canal Treatment

Doctor points to filled root canal in dental x-ray.

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure performed to save a severely decayed or infected tooth. It involves removing the infected or damaged pulp from the inside of the tooth and then cleaning, disinfecting, and sealing the root canal system. Here’s why root canal treatment may be necessary:

Tooth decay: When a cavity is left untreated, the decay can progress deep into the tooth, reaching the pulp. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. If the decay reaches this stage, it can cause severe pain and infection, requiring a root canal to remove the infected pulp.

Dental trauma: Teeth that have suffered a traumatic injury, such as a fracture or a strong impact, can damage the pulp. Even if there are no visible cracks or fractures, the trauma can lead to inflammation or infection within the tooth, necessitating root canal treatment.

Infection or abscess: Bacterial infection can develop inside a tooth, leading to an abscess. An abscess is a pus-filled pocket that forms at the root of the tooth, causing significant pain, swelling, and sometimes a bad taste or odor in the mouth. Root canal treatment is necessary to remove the infection and prevent it from spreading further.

Deep dental fillings: Large or deep dental fillings that are in close proximity to the pulp can cause irritation or inflammation of the pulp tissue. If the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, a root canal may be needed to address the problem and save the tooth.

Cracked or fractured tooth: A crack or fracture in a tooth can extend deep into the pulp, exposing it to bacteria and leading to infection. In such cases, a root canal is required to remove the damaged pulp and prevent further complications.

By undergoing root canal treatment, the infected or damaged pulp is removed, and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Afterward, the canals are sealed with a biocompatible material, typically gutta-percha, to prevent reinfection. Finally, a dental crown or filling is placed on the tooth to restore its strength, function, and appearance.

The benefits of root canal treatment include:

Saving the natural tooth: Root canal treatment allows for the preservation of the natural tooth, avoiding the need for extraction.

Relieving pain and discomfort: By removing the infected pulp, the underlying cause of severe tooth pain is eliminated, providing relief to the patient.

Restoring tooth function: Following root canal treatment, a dental crown or filling is placed on the tooth, restoring its ability to bite, chew, and function normally.

Maintaining oral health: By saving the natural tooth, root canal treatment helps to maintain proper chewing function, preserves the alignment of surrounding teeth, and prevents other dental issues that may arise from missing teeth.

It is important to consult with us if you experience tooth pain, sensitivity, or any other dental symptoms, so we can determine if root canal treatment is necessary to address the underlying problem and preserve your oral health.
